Updated: Jan 28, 2022

This Holocaust Memorial Day, TikTok have launched a plan to help fight Holocaust denial. They have carried out new measures to fight Holocaust denial on its platform by partnering up with Unesco and the World Jewish Congress (WJC). Therefore users who search information in relation to the Holocaust will be directed to the respective information.

Speaking on Holocaust Memorial Day, TikTok have stated that when people search for words related to the Holocaust, they will now see a banner at the top of the results page, This allows them to visit a Unesco and WJC website aboutholocaust.org to learn more.

Users will also be taken to the website when they look up Holocaust related hashtags, where they can look at accurate information.

TikTok also stated that in the future it would include a permanent banner at the bottom of videos discussing the Holocaust. This will direct users to reliable information.

Unesco said that false information about the Holocaust and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories have "spiked dramatically on social media platforms" since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Critics have said that the biggest social media and video platforms need to do more. In August, the Center for Countering Digital Hatred accused major social media platforms of failing to take down more than 80% of anti-Semitic posts on their platforms. The research covered Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube.
